CROWN CEREMONIAL

A celebration of English Coronation Music

 Saturday 1st July 2023. 7.30pm

Holy Trinity Church, Broadstairs

Thanet Festival Choir’s Summer Concert will commemorate the Coronation of King Charles III with a programme of music from Coronations through the ages.

Looking back over all the Coronations for which there are records it becomes readily apparent that hundreds of pieces of music have been performed over the centuries, so in order to narrow the choice down our Music Director, Clifford, decided only to include music that was specifically composed for a Coronation of King or Queen of England.  The choice was then narrowed further to create a programme of music to replicate the same order of performance as in the actual coronation service. Some pieces have enjoyed repetition in every Coronation since they were composed, like Parry’s I was glad when they said unto me (Psalm 122) from 1902 onwards, and Handel’s Zadok the Priest from 1727 onwards.

You can look forward to works by, amongst others, Handel, Parry, Alcock, Vaughan Williams, Stanford and Elgar – a true celebration of English Coronation Music.

Organ accompaniment – and a performance of William Walton’s splendid coronation march Crown Imperial – will be provided by Jeremy Lloyd, Assistant Music Director and Sub-Organist at Rochester Cathedral.

Tickets cost £12, which includes a complimentary glass of wine or non-alcoholic alternative at the end of the concert. Available from our Ticket Secretary on 01304 620560, online via our website www.thanetfestivalchoir.org  from Choir members, by emailing thanetfestivalchoir@gmail.com,  or at the door.
